For those of you who've eagerly read my student teaching foibles on this blog, I am going to have a new blog. Please leave me a comment (esp if you're a lurker), and when I get a new blog, I'll comment on your blog with that new address.
Till then...hope the rest of the school year goes well for everyone!

Housecleaning
I printed off all my blogs related to student teaching. Now, I'm going to delete all those posts. I think it's the safest thing to do right now. Just, because...
Also, I won't be posting on here till I find a job. I will create a new home once I'm employed. But, till then, I'll be reading everyone else's blogs, for sure. And, for those who read my 1st blog, go right ahead.

On the first day
I did it. I got up early and I made it to school on time. I, Amy, arrived for my very first day of student teaching today at 7:30 a.m.
I really want a nap.
Today was interesting. Both of my cooperating teachers kept apologizing about how they weren't very organized and this wasn't a very good day to be starting with the whole teaching thing. I kept trying to tell them not to worry about it. The way I look at it, it's all experience in some form or another, so it doesn't really matter how I begin. All I'm doing for awhile is observing anyway, and starting off a new semester is a good things to observe.
My current dilemma involves choosing which classes to teach. I will automatically be teaching two sections of English 11 (aka American Literature. They're covering poets and short stories this term. I swear we covered more, on the whole, when I was a junior, but I could be wrong). My choice comes in that I can either teach two sections of Mass Media Analysis or two sections of Honors English 10 (so, 4 classes either way). Honors English 10 will have a bit of overlap in subject matter with English 11. So, that means that prep would perhaps be shorter or less involved. However, Mass Media would give me a chance to use my Comm degree again. I have to admit, that is VERY tempting.
I need to decide by the end of the week. AUGH!
So far I'm off to a good start, but yet, I didn't DO very much today, except for watch. *sigh*

It'll be One Week...
Actually less than that, and I start student teaching.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! (I'm doing the Macauley Culkin Home Alone face/scream thing right now)
I'm beginning to freak out just a bit. I can't believe that it's already next week. I start on January 3rd, so actually, that's one week from YESTERDAY. Oy. Ohmigod. What am I gonna do?!?!?!
I can't believe that I'm to the student teaching portion of my program already. That seems so surreal too. Now, I don't think that my professors would have suggested or pushed me to do it this way (start student teaching while still finishing up coursework), if they didn't think that I could handle it and would be ready for it. And yes, that's a nice feeling, knowing that--that they have that confidence in me (the head of the program and my advisor, has told me that she thinks they're going to see great things out of me, and that I'm going to be an EXCELLENT teacher).
But still...I am FREAKING out.
That tendency to do so is part of my personality.
I can't believe I start next Wednesday. I can't believe I have to get up so freakin' early (I have to be at school by 7:30. The last month or so I'd been arriving to work at my old job by about 11:00. Yeah).
I should get dressed (slacking b/c I'm not working this wk) and go run my errands.

Gearing up
We (my fellow student-teachers and I) have a meeting this afternoon at 4:00. An orientation meeting. I'm taking my copies of all of my Practicum observation stuff with me to the meeting. I'm not sure if I need it, but I'm going to take it anyway. What's fun/funny is that this semester I only needed 25 hours of observation. I ended up with 38 hours. OH YEAH BABY!
I met with my student teaching co-teachers on Friday. They're very nice. Kara B & Sue R. With Kara I'll be teaching American Lit to 11th graders. With Sue I'll be teaching much of the same to Honors 10th graders. The overlap is nice and eases my nerves a bit. I can't believe how nervous I am already. I'm sure it'll just get worse till I actually start. AND, I can picture it now that I'm not going to get much sleep the night before I begin. Oy.
One thing that Kara mentioned is that there are a few people who are pregnant in the department and that the district is in the habit of hiring student teachers (or has done so in the past). YIPES! That's awesome, but also, scary.
Additionally, my media background (one of my BA's from HC is in Broadcast Comm) would come in handy b/c it sounds like they're looking for a new sponsor for some media thing at Millard North.
Whoa...
This could be a very interesting second semester.

Winding down, yet winding up
Well, I'm nearing the end of my coursework (for all practical purposes). I only have 3 (maybe 4) classes left, meaning that I'm finished with actually going to school for me in the middle of March.
Meanwhile, I start student teaching (AAAUGH!!) in January. I'm really excited, but the more I think I about, I'm really really nervous. Not just because it's something new and this is something that I want to do really well, but because I'll be leaving behind the familiar. Change very often terrifies me. In the grand scheme of things my sense of adventure is kinda small. I just realized yesterday when I drove into the parking lot at work, that soon I wouldn't be doing that anymore. And it scares me. It's such a weird feeling.
But, I'm SO eager to start student teaching. I'm ready to get into the classroom (frightening as that might sound) and start interacting on a full-time/all-day basis with high school kids. I'm ready to get them excited (at least a little bit) about reading and writing and learning. And I'm ready to get to know my students.
So far my cooperating teachers (I have two ladies) have been very nice (via email). I'm trying to get it set up that I go in to observe them on Friday (to calm some of my nerves).
AAAUUGH!! Too many changes!!! Freaking out!

Sweet!
Two cool things!
1) I found out where I'll be student teaching--Millard North High School. Hooray! I'm excited. I'll be working with two teachers apparently.
2) I'm going to get an A+ in my computer/technology class at school that we just wrapped up this weekend.
I'm so glad that at the end of 2006 I'm done w/ current job & will be moving onward & upward to the teaching thing. Whoo-ee!
